Why It Matters

New Kitchen Cabinets Cost Thousands. Painting Them Costs a Fraction — and the Results Speak for Themselves

Kitchen cabinet replacement is one of the most expensive renovations a homeowner can undertake. Painting cabinets professionally delivers a comparable visual transformation at a fraction of the cost — and when done right with proper prep, priming, and a spray finish, the results are indistinguishable from new.

The key is technique. Brush and roller finishes on cabinets show brush marks and stipple texture. A proper spray finish — applied after thorough degreasing, sanding, and priming — produces the smooth, factory-quality result that makes painted cabinets look genuinely new rather than painted.

We remove the doors and drawers, paint the boxes in place, and spray all doors and drawer fronts off-site or in a controlled environment for a flawless finish. Hardware is removed before painting and reinstalled after.

Kitchen Cabinets
Upper and lower cabinets, cabinet boxes, and all doors and drawer fronts. The most transformative single kitchen upgrade available short of a full renovation.
Bathroom Vanities
The same spray finish process applied to bathroom vanity cabinets. A freshly painted vanity in a crisp white or warm tone transforms a dated bathroom instantly.
Built-ins & Millwork
Built-in shelving, entertainment units, laundry room cabinets, and other millwork painted to match or complement the rest of the home.
Pre-Sale Projects
Kitchen cabinets are one of the first things buyers see. A fresh paint job before listing can meaningfully influence first impressions and perceived value.
How We Work

Our Cabinet Painting Process — Step by Step

01 —
Free On-Site Estimate
We assess your cabinets, discuss colour and finish options, and give you a clear scope and price. We'll also advise on whether your cabinets are good candidates for painting based on material and condition.
02 —
Hardware & Door Removal
All hardware — hinges, handles, pulls — is removed and bagged. Doors and drawer fronts are carefully removed and labelled for reinstallation in the correct positions.
03 —
Degrease & Sand
Cabinet surfaces are thoroughly degreased to remove cooking residue and oils, then sanded to create a proper mechanical bond for the primer. This step is what makes the finish last.
04 —
Prime
A bonding primer is applied to all surfaces. On wood cabinets, this also seals the grain and prevents tannin bleed-through, which causes yellowing through the topcoat.
05 —
Spray Finish
Two coats of premium cabinet paint applied by spray for a smooth, factory-quality finish. Boxes are sprayed in place; doors and drawer fronts are sprayed separately for full coverage on all edges.
06 —
Reinstall & Walkthrough
Doors and drawer fronts rehung and adjusted. Hardware reinstalled. Full walkthrough to confirm every surface, edge, and hinge meets our standard before we pack up.

About Altona Painting

Founded by Michael. Built on a Standard He Still Holds Every Crew To.

Cabinet painting is one of the most technically demanding painting services — surface prep, product selection, and spray application technique all have to be right. Michael Cappa built Altona Painting's cabinet process around a factory-finish standard: if it looks painted rather than sprayed, it's not done right.

When you book cabinet painting with Altona, you're getting a crew trained in proper degreasing, bonding primer application, and spray technique — not a general painter with a roller and a tin of wall paint. The difference is visible the moment the doors go back on.

Common Questions

Kitchen Cabinet Painting FAQ

Most solid wood, MDF, and plywood cabinets can be painted successfully. Thermofoil or laminate cabinets can sometimes be painted depending on their condition and the adhesion properties of the existing surface — we'll assess this during your estimate. Cabinets in very poor structural condition may not be good candidates.

Most kitchen cabinet projects take 3 to 5 days from start to finish, including door removal, prep, priming, spraying, curing time, and reinstallation. We'll give you a specific timeline during your estimate based on the number of doors and drawers involved.

Partially. During active spraying and curing, the kitchen will be off-limits for periods. You'll have limited access to the space overall while the project is underway. We try to minimize disruption and will discuss the daily schedule with you so you can plan around it.

With proper prep and the right cabinet-specific paint, a professionally painted finish is very durable — resistant to moisture, grease, and normal wear. The key is the prep: degreasing, sanding, and bonding primer. Cabinets painted without this prep will chip and peel prematurely regardless of what topcoat is used.

We remove and reinstall your existing hardware. If you want to upgrade to new handles or pulls, we recommend purchasing them before the project begins — we'll install them as part of the finishing step. New hardware is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost additions to a cabinet repaint.
