Professional spray finish. Proper prep and priming. Durable, smooth results that transform your kitchen for a fraction of the cost of replacement. Serving Durham Region, York, and the GTA from Ajax since 2018.
Kitchen cabinet replacement is one of the most expensive renovations a homeowner can undertake. Painting cabinets professionally delivers a comparable visual transformation at a fraction of the cost — and when done right with proper prep, priming, and a spray finish, the results are indistinguishable from new.
The key is technique. Brush and roller finishes on cabinets show brush marks and stipple texture. A proper spray finish — applied after thorough degreasing, sanding, and priming — produces the smooth, factory-quality result that makes painted cabinets look genuinely new rather than painted.
We remove the doors and drawers, paint the boxes in place, and spray all doors and drawer fronts off-site or in a controlled environment for a flawless finish. Hardware is removed before painting and reinstalled after.
Cabinet painting is one of the most technically demanding painting services — surface prep, product selection, and spray application technique all have to be right. Michael Cappa built Altona Painting's cabinet process around a factory-finish standard: if it looks painted rather than sprayed, it's not done right.
When you book cabinet painting with Altona, you're getting a crew trained in proper degreasing, bonding primer application, and spray technique — not a general painter with a roller and a tin of wall paint. The difference is visible the moment the doors go back on.
"Our kitchen cabinets went from a dated oak stain to a gorgeous crisp white. The spray finish is completely smooth — no brush marks, no texture. It looks like a brand new kitchen. The crew was professional, clean, and finished on time."
Whitby, ON — Google Review"We had our cabinets painted before listing. Our realtor said buyers were commenting on how fresh and modern the kitchen looked. The investment paid off in the sale price. Altona's work is top-notch — highly recommend."
Ajax, ON — Google Review"I was skeptical painted cabinets could look as good as new ones. I was wrong. The quality of the finish is exceptional — the doors are perfectly smooth and the colour is exactly what we wanted. This crew knows what they're doing."
Pickering, ON — Google ReviewMost solid wood, MDF, and plywood cabinets can be painted successfully. Thermofoil or laminate cabinets can sometimes be painted depending on their condition and the adhesion properties of the existing surface — we'll assess this during your estimate. Cabinets in very poor structural condition may not be good candidates.
Kitchen cabinet projects generally take 10 business days to fulfill from start to finish. We spend 2-3 days on-site removing the doors and drawer faces, and then we prep, prime, and paint the boxes. The doors and drawers then go to the spray shop for 10 business days, where they are prepped (sanded, washed, caulked, and wood-filled), primed, and painted. The boxes get a brush and roll finish for both priming and painting, and the doors and drawers get a spray finish (spray prime and spray paint).
The kitchen can be used while work is underway. However, it is highly recommended that the doors and drawers be emptied while we are working on the boxes as you likely don’t want fine sanding dust on all of your dish ware. Also, the kitchen will essentially be off limits during work hours, but can be used before or after work hours.
With proper prep and the right cabinet-specific paint, a professionally painted finish is very durable — resistant to moisture, grease, and normal wear. The key is the prep: degreasing, sanding, and bonding primer. Cabinets painted without this prep will chip and peel prematurely regardless of what topcoat is used.
We remove and reinstall your existing hardware. If you want to upgrade to new handles or pulls, we recommend purchasing them before the project begins — we'll install them as part of the finishing step. New hardware is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost additions to a cabinet repaint. However, we must have the new hardware before the project begins to ensure filling of the old holes, and proper measuring and drilling of the new holes before the priming and painting begins.
